Spencer is a former Royal Marine and England Rugby International with over 10 yrs experience working in elite level sport. He has a first class Bachelors Degree (Sport & Exercise Science) from The University of Northampton and a Master's Degree (Strength & Conditioning) from The University of Edinburgh.

Spencer is a consultant strength & conditioning specialist at the Nuffield Health Hospital in Derby. He is also completing a PhD in musculoskeletal rehabilitation at The University of Warwick. This involves developing and validating a functional assessment protocol for physical therapists, and researching the role of 'strength & conditioning' within primary care for the rehabilitation and management of patients with musculoskeletal injuries; with a particular focus on osteoporosis. He has previously researched the adaptational effects of Olympic lifting training on sports performance; particularly its effect on jumping ability, change of direction and force production.
